After an early game, the West Coast Terremoto 2013 boys team continued their winning streak, playing in the Dublin United Shamrock Tournament this past weekend, with 3 victories, 17 goals and 6 against, that included two victories over a tough Livermore Fusion SC 2013 Boys Gold squad, one in a preliminary round game 5-0, and one in the final third-place championship game, 4-2.  

The team scoring featured several goals by Tony Mendoza (Miguel’s son), Andros Azer, and Julian Marron, among others, and included goals by Mason Fehlmann with two, Grayson Ryan with two, Grayson Layog, and Brayden Aycock.  Marron scored twice in the final after a hat trick in the first Fusion contest, and Azer, wearing number 10, scored twice in the 4-2 third place championship final to seal the win after the team had jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Fusion had battled back from that deficit to a 3-2 score.  Again tricky midfielder Joaquin Retuyan was a standout, and great defensive play enabled the Terremoto team to perform well in winning the bronze medal Sunday, including shutdown defensive play by Gavin Su, Luke Achziger, Ryan, Mendoza, and Layog.     

The team has dedicated its season to Tony Mendoza’s father Miguel Mendoza, who lost his life just the previous weekend in a tragic accident and hospital stay.  To show support, a large number of Miguel’s family and friends were out to watch Tony play in this tournament, who did not disappoint with his stellar goals and all-around general play reminiscent of his father’s playing days.  Tears flowed as Tony’s goals were a reminder of his father’s passion and love for the game, the team, and his son, who he so enjoyed watching play.  One long beautiful pass to the streaking forward Marron in the final game resulted in a great assist that propelled the team to victory.
