The 2009 West Coast Wolfpack faced a challenging weekend, taking on Davis Legacy on Saturday and Cal Magic on Sunday in ECNL-RL play. While the results didn’t go their way, the team never gave up and showed grit, determination, and glimpses of their attacking talent.
Against Davis Legacy, the Wolfpack came out strong with early chances, but the game proved to be a tight battle. Shanaya Chatterjee, Avery Steffen, Taylor Caoili and Makenna Loder pushed forward and created opportunities, while Marietou Keita and Sydnie Hernandez combined well in attack, keeping the defense on their toes and defenders Izabella Arellano, Ashley Browning, Savannah Spencer and Madelynn Hernandez fought to slow down the Legacy offense. Isla Castro and Megan Silva were steady in goal, making key saves to keep the team in the contest.
Sunday against Cal Magic, the Wolfpack battled back from an early 1–0 deficit. Avery Steffen blasted a powerful shot that deflected off a defender and found the back of the net, leveling the game. Midfielders Sofia Cabello, Saniyah Lee, and Layla Flannigan worked tirelessly to control the game and added energy and drive, Isabella Ibanez and Madelynn Hernandez provided great width and runs up and down the flank to produce some dangerous opportunities for our offense. Captains Ashley Browning and Madelynn Hernandez provided leadership and versatility throughout both matches.
Coach Dayak praised the team’s effort: “The girls never gave up this weekend, and that’s what I’m most proud of. Their fight and commitment were outstanding.”
Though the weekend didn’t produce the desired wins, the Wolfpack demonstrated resilience and a growing understanding on the field. With continued development and team chemistry, brighter days are ahead in ECNL-RL play.
